The Association of Postconsumer Plastic Recyclers, APR, has developed a rigorous testing program to help plastic bottle innovators determine the impact of innovations on plastic bottle recycling. The testing protocols include PET and HDPE containers.

The testing protocols were developed by consensus of the APR member stakeholders to factually represent the technical quality needs for plastic bottle recycling. The decision process is based on sound technical principles and evidenced by data obtained per established test methods. The use of the protocols is strictly voluntary and intended for the use of the innovators.

APR appreciates bottle innovators who undertake the examinations called for in the two stage process. The first stage, Critical Guidance, is intended to be the less extensive, relatively quick assessment covering the majority of the issues relevant to plastic bottle recycling. The second stage, Applications Guidance, is to follow successful Critical Guidance testing and addresses specific issues for major end use applications of recycled plastic. APR recognizes upon petition innovations which meet or exceed the most rigorous guidance from the Guidance Documents.

The recognition program, which is voluntary, recognizes petitions for Critical Guidance attainment and petitions for Applications Guidance attainment. Petitioners who produce components of bottles, such as plastic resins, often select to do the Critical Guidance testing and petitioning. Petitioners who produce or market bottles may select to do the additional testing per the Applications Guidance.
